What is “Self Care?” – it’s taking care of yourself emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. Remembering to take time for YOU! Do the things that refresh you and renew your zest for life! Includes things like making time for hobbies, a spa day, massage, reading books, spending time with friends, etc.
Why is it important? – When we neglect ourselves on an emotional, mental, and spiritual level, we end up with less of ourselves to give to others. Self-care helps us be at our BEST for everyone around us!
- Only 29% of women find it easy to make time for themselves.
- That leaves 71% that feel like it is hard. Most of these women are moms with little kids and they’ve admitted that it gets easier when the kids are older.
Allow time to rest physically. Our human bodies were designed to work 6 days and rest 1. We stretch ourselves so thin trying to be Super Woman that we wear ourselves out and feel guilty when we take time to rest. Instead, make a conscious CHOICE to rest and give yourself permission to do so.
Plan a day of rest in your schedule once a week. For busy mom’s this might seem like a challenge, so something that you could start is a family rest day where everyone stays in their pajamas and you have a movie marathon, a game day, or a quiet day of reading books together as a family. Protect this REST DAY as though it was as important as your job – because on that day, it IS your job! Rest and relax! Ignore the excuses and just let yourself…rest.
Utilize stolen moments. (Rest for your mind) Busy moms, and even busy business women without kids can benefit from utilizing stolen moments to help rest their minds.
Use your time in the car to fill yourself up with an inspirational audio or your favorite music.
Carve out 30 minutes in your schedule to make it to the gym 3-4 times a week and listen to your favorite podcast, audio book, or encouraging music as you tune out the world around you and increase your endorphins.
Put inspirational quotes on your phone, or pull up your Bible app while waiting in line at the grocery store or at doctor appointments to fill your mind with truth!
Journal in a notebook or on your notes app on your phone about what your favorite hobbies are and then write down a goal of when you will begin them again.
Embrace the truth that you are worth it! The hardest part of applying self-care and resting more will be in our belief system. Many times at the root of neglecting ourselves is the belief that says “I am not worth it.” We have got to get to the point where we embrace the truth that YES I AM WORTH IT!
