There is something amazing about the faith of a child. It’s awesome to witness! Kids are innocent, full of hope, completely trustful, and secure in the fact that God loves them. It’s our job to nurture and grow this faith!
Parenting Advice from the Book of Judges
Believe it or not, I got some amazing insight into teaching my child faith from the book of Judges. In the midst of the children of Israel disobeying, the battles, the victories, and the stories of the Judges comes some heavy words for all people who have influence over children and how to cultivate their childlike faith…or squash it.
“After that whole generation had been gathered to their fathers, another generation grew up, who knew neither the Lord nor what he had done for Israel. Then the Israelite’s did evil in the eyes of the Lord and served the Baals.” (Judges 2:10)
There is a lesson there…did you catch it? Children will not learn about God through osmosis. A whole generation of parents completely forget to tell their children about God and death and destruction awaited their children.
Allow me to share with you a little history lesson. This generation of parents in the book of Judges knew God delivered them from Egypt. They experienced God parting the Red Sea and the Jordan River to let them cross to safety. They enjoyed the victory of Jericho when the walls came tumbling down. These were people who experienced the awesome, miraculous work of God first hand…but, they failed to tell their children about it!
This is for ALL adults…not just parents! Mandy’s story of “Adopting” the children around her….
3 steps to Grow a Child’s Faith
- Share your story- Your children need to know the stories of Moses, Noah, Daniel, Esther, and Paul and the incredible lives they lived. They also need to know your story! Share with them how your first learned about God. Tell them how God has worked in your life. This is an incredible way to teach your child about God! We like to read Bible stories at night before bedtime and I share my own stories when it’s appropriate.
- Teach them how to pray– Teach your child how to pray out loud. It is incredible the amount of adults who are not comfortable praying out loud in front of other people. This might be you! Make it a priority to teach your children this incredible life-skill. When you pray at dinner and before bedtime have your child say their own prayer out loud- not just repeat after Mom or Dad. It will be a tangible way to watch their faith grow…and here what is really on the heart of your child. I have our little one’s pray out loud at dinner and at bedtime often.
- Enjoy God’s creation together- when you are outside, playing at the park, or enjoying the zoo spend some time talking about God’s creation. Make it natural for your child to find “God-Moments” in their day. Talk about how creative God must be to make all the pretty flowers, how amazing creation is, and how much fun God must have had creating all the animals. This is an easy one for all Moms and Dads to do.
