How to Be Brave When You Want to Quit
by: Raychel Chumley
Some days the last thing I feel is brave. Some days the chatter inside my head is so loud I can barely focus. Some days I’m just tired. Some days I’m moody. Some days I completely lose it over the littlest things. Some days I say things I don’t mean and hurt the people I love. Some days my commitments seem to big and my faith is too small. I have doubts. I have questions. I have fears. I have moments of weakness. Some days I just don’t feel brave. Some days I just want to quit. But I am not a quitter. I am an overcomer.
Thank God that the size of my bravery does not determine the size of my calling. Thank God that His strength is made perfect in my weakness. A few years ago. I started learning some skills to help me be brave despite my exhaustion, my doubts, and my fear. These tools keep me moving forward even when I want to quit.
1. Honor the small steps– It’s so easy to want to quit when you aren’t seeing growth as quickly as you want to. The truth is that every brave step you take sows a seed for your future. But, it’s easy to overlook the baby steps. It’s easy to forget about the small seeds planted in faith.
This was a HUGE problem for me. If things didn’t happen on MY time and the way I wanted-I would just start stomping all over my baby sprouts! Sometimes I would pull them out of the ground completely! That’s not a good way to grow a garden…and it’s not a good way to grow bravery, either. We need to remember to honor the small steps. We need to remember those baby seeds that were planted in faith; and, not pull them up in moments of weakness. Honoring the small steps will help you be brave when you just want to quit.
2. Take Action- Action is a fear killer! It’s fear that makes you want to quit. 2 Chronicles 15:7 says, “But you, take courage! Do not let your hands be weak, for your work shall be rewarded.” It might not seem like it some days, but if you don’t give up you WILL accomplish more than you could ever imagine.
Make the choice to take action even when you are scared. Make the choice to take action even when you are exhausted. Make the choice to DO something even when you want to give up. Take the focus off of your fear and put it towards your future. Don’t give up. You will build your courage with every step you take.
3. Create a Courage Posse- One of my coaches Dani Johnson often says, “Birds of a feather flock together.” It’s true! Who you hang out with will determine whether you are courageous or fearful. Fear breads fear and courage breeds courage. If you want to be brave and accomplish everything God has created you for- you need a courage posse. Read books about inspirational people. Attend conferences and seminars, Hire a coach ( I know a few good ones 😉 ) who can keep you accountable and remind you of your calling and purpose when fear creeps in.
Ladies, I cannot stress this enough, surround yourself with brave women who will motivate you, inspire you, and point you towards greatness. A courage posse will be your life line when life gets tough and you just want to quit. They won’t let you forget how brave you truly are.
The truth is… I am brave.
Even when I don’t feel like it. You are brave too, dear friend. We all have moments where we just want to give up. But when you wear the title of “Child of God,” you wear the title of Overcomer… not quitter. Some days are rough. That’s just life. But, that’s when you need to remind yourself of who you are (and WHOSE you are!), put on your big girl panties, and be brave. Honor the small steps, take action to kill fear, and surround yourself with a courage posse. You have a mission and a purpose and your success will be determined by your actions. Be brave and don’t give up.
